republican senator chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense. >> our sources are telling us that is supposed to be in the next few days. the former republican lawmaker, the former nebraska senator chuck hagel has been a long-time friend of the president. when the president was senator travelled together to iraq and afghanistan. but there is already heavy opposition to the selection of chuck hagel if it is to happen, if he is to be nominated, most of it from within his republican party because he was fiercely against the troop surge led by george w. bush and a lot of opposition for comments he made dating back about seven or eight years ago when he referred to the jewish lobby as opposed to the pro israel lobby. senator lindsey graham described this as if it happens to be an in your face nomination. >> we will check back with you later. >>> let's get back to the issue of raising the nation's debt limit. lindsey graham pretty much stated the republican position today. >> if you raise the debt ceiling by a dollar you should cut spending by a dollar that is the way to go forward

gone, being replaced by folks like chuck hagel and john kerry who if confirmed both have more cautious views about the use of military force, president obama seems to be protecting himself from a scenario where he gets boxed in politically by the pentagon like some believe the president believes he was in 2011. hagel, though, still has his own fight on his hands. yet senator john mccain acknowledged that his skepticism about the nomination of his long time friend and ally has its roots, and why they've split since, has its roots in the fact that hagel split with mccain on the iraq surge. >> we both knew that we were losing the war in iraq. lindsey graham and i and joe lieberman and others said we need a surge. and the president somewhat reluctantly adopted the surge and it succeeded. senator hagel obviously said it couldn't. and he called it the biggest blunder since the vietnam war. that is a really gross misconception of america's role there and in the world. >> south carolina senator lindsey graham said he could put a hold on cia nominee john brennan's nomination until the white hou

. you take somebody like chuck hagel who has already signaled to the iranians he's taken off any military strikes in the event of them having nuclear capability, that this can't be the best personality we have. anti-israel and so forth. so not only did he ignore any women in the picks, he's picked people who are not qualified. >> when you talk about anti-israel, talk about what you mean. that's been disproven, john from here to sunday. >> what happened is chuck hagel is going back and changing history. first of all, he did go back and say he does not believe the right way ever to stop iran is to have any type of military strike possibility. now, you got to pressure remember, this is the same president who already took out the russians -- he was going to be more flexible negotiating missile defense. now somebody already is tipping off the iranians that he's going to be flexible on negotiations. second of all, chuck hagel was very, very critical of the israel and jewish lobbying in washington, d.c., said it was too aggressive. many in the israel and jewish community took that as a

a fascinating story regarding charles schumer. it seems that chuck schumer is the key to chuck hagel's failure or success. tell us why. >> that's right. and first we have to do happy friday. >> happy friday. >> happy friday. >> boy, do we need that. >> and this is a surprise. senator schumer has been telling his allies in new york, especially jewish groups, that would be, quote, very hard, very hard for him to support chuck hagel for pentagon head because of his positions on israel the other day. the real canary in the coal mine on the trouble that the hagel nomination has faced was on "meet the press" several weaks ago when senator schumer surprisingly wouldn't commit to supporting him. and usually when the president has a nominee, favorite nominee, a name out there, the number three democrat in the senate, chuck schumer, is going to say sure, i'll support him. he said he's going to listen for the hearings. and that's where he still is. just wednesday at a private breakfast at park avenue winter, one of those fancy restaurants up there, senator schumer was saying that he was very uneasy about

and expend all their ammunition, if they have much, probably on chuck hagel. they may try to take them both out, but it seems to me, you can't litigate every single nominee that the president, who was just reelected, sends down to the hill. they are going to have 55 votes in the senate. it doesn't seem to me jack lew is going to be the one that they really make a fuss over, but we'll see what comes out over the next 48 hours and what they are saying once it's official, what sort of vibe and signals we get from the senate. >> jack lew and vibes. i want to open this up to our panel here. jen, you know, to some degree, the bluster from the republican party is now par for the course on basically everything. if the president announced he was going to have a tuna fish sandwich for lunch, i'm sure there would be outcry it wasn't chicken salad. >> if lindsey graham was nominated, i'm not sure he'd vote for himself at this point. it's become this big trend, that's unfortunate. take a step back, it is delaying the process to getting important nominees in place, and whether you're a democrat or republ

about chuck hagel, to potentially being confirmed as the new secretary of defense whar what is the reaction in afghanistan? >> i can tell you with the afghan officials, they will work with anyone, but at the same time, they do in the think that americans will not have a say on their future. when you talk to them, they say, it doesn't matter to them. >> no matter who is in the post, they do not see them as working with them in the capacity they have in the past? >> they say they want the afghans taking the lead, that even means when it comes to washington decisions. >> safe travels, thank you for joining us. >>> the president had more on his plate than afghanistan, he is trying to put together a team to successfully craft his second term agenda. that is meaning a cabinet. we are our guests with us. it's great to have you all here and you know, a lot has been made of the first four of the president's major appointments. they are all white men. heather has the president fallen short of the diversity standard that he set in the first administration? >> if you look at the totalit

confirmation process for chuck hagel. we were talking a lot about this yesterday. also some other nominees as well. but you say the white house is looking forward to these fights. why would that be? >> no, that's exactly right. this is a real window into why the president made this tough choice of chuck hagel. and that is we talked to people around the white house who said that the president wants fights with congress. and there's both a short-term strategy here and a long-term strategy. in the short term, the president wants to take advantage of the fact that he's the only person in these negotiations who's not running for re-election. so he can afford to be tough. he can afford to stand up for what he said. second, simple contempt by the president. these republicans who lost to him so badly in 2012, in his view, just won't take yes for an answer. so there's a little bit of exasperation by the president. but pull back the camera, and you see the bigger strategy, which is looking ahead to the midterm elections in 2014. by picking tough fights with the hill, the president uses his office to

with president obama like chuck hagel and jack lew and republicans delayed 85% of the planned relief funding for hurricane sandy. that, of course, drew a strong rebuke from republican governor chris christie. this is not politics devoted to a competing vision. this is politics devoted to digs corruption and obstruction, and those recent fights i mentioned don't even include the explosion of minority obstruction in the u.s. senate. the filibuster has been used against more of obama's legislation than any president in history. the bottom line is that the gop is exploiting what i think is a hole in our democracy. can you lose elections and still get your way now if you don't care about responsibly governing. of course, it's hard to get voters to notice this kind of thing, but i believe obama has a big opportunity at the inauguration. he can call for more than just broad patriotism or vague unity. he can call out the amorality of a political party that would rather threaten man made crises than actually gonchings avern, advocate for cooperation. i think it's worth a try >> the majority of republ

that jack lew will be a fight just as chuck hagel will be a fight, just as susan rice was a fight. the second problem for president obama is that so far his chosen bantd doesn't include any sisters, nor does it include any racial diversity. even members of his own party are expressing dismay. new york democrat charlie rangel called the lack of women embarrassing as hell and yesterday chairwoman of the congressional black caucus, marcia fudge wrote a letter urging the president to nominate two members of the cbc. bill, you are a former diverse member of the president's -- >> still diverse. >> yes. you remain diverse, though not sequestered at 1600 pennsylvania avenue, for which we are thankful. i wonder what you make about this contention that he is being too insular, a, in terms of the possibility of group think, people that have been with him forever, and then, b, how much is the diversity problem for him? >> well, i'll start with b. you know, i think that what we're seeing here is more of an optics problem than it is a real problem because by the numbers half of the white house

on hagel and kerry to make good on that promise that he put forward in 2008 to scale down the u.s. involvement. the american public wants it, and he's going to deliver in the second term. >> margie, what is interesting about the two appointments that victoria just mentioned, hagel and brennan are both people the president has worked with. he seems to trust the allies. not the same in the lincoln term of rivals. these are not rivals. these people are close to the president. change in strategy here? >> no, i don't think so. i think the president has had people who have different points of view from himself and from each other. we saw that in the case with secretary gates and vice president biden who recommended against making the call on osama bin laden. but the president made it anywhere. i also think it's important to look at how the president keeps momentum of bringing everyone together. in style of bringing everyone together in his administration and across the aisle and voters. i mean, voters -- they selected obama, they voted for obama in 2008. they believed in him and they

, republicans are outraged over chuck hagel's nomination for defense secretary. meanwhile, they have no problem with known conspiracy theorist michele bachmann, congresswoman from minnesota, retaining her seat on the house intelligence committee. remember, it was bachmann who led the witch-hunt against clinton's aide last year. in a wild conspiracy theory, bachmann claimed she had ties to a muslim extremist group. her campaign against muslims included absurd statements like this. >> it appears that there has been deep penetration in the halls of our united states government by the muslim brotherhood. the muslim brotherhood has been found to be an unindicted co-conspirator on terrorism cases, and yet it appears that there are individuals associated with the muslim brotherhood who have positions, very sensitive positions in our department of justice, our department of homeland security, potentially even in the national intelligence agency. >> bachmann's muslim witch-hunt drew a wide range of criticism from both parties. her former presidential campaign chief ed rollins slammed the baseless attack

that the president's nominees so far have absolutely been spot on. particularly with senator chuck hagel taking over defense department. he did try to get susan rice before senator kerry took it. i think you raised a legitimate point as he continues his nominations. take for example the transportation. he has an ideal choice here to pick a woman, a republican. senator hutchison from texas who really understands the infrastructure challenges of our nation. and i think as a republican can help us raise money in public-private ventures. understanding government can't get the $100 billion needed for our roads that need repair and enhancement. we have to do it like the state of illinois did. city of chicago did. do private-public ventures. but the president did appoint two people who were women to the supreme court. but i do think this is a legitimate point as he continues on. >> hogan, i'm curious about the debt ceiling fight. we know that is looming. it is expected to get nasty. how much do you think the republicans are going to take on the president, take on the democrats? you see what senator harry r

jack lew and chuck hagel continue to be targeted by republicans willing to block anything president obama puts forward. the gop's threat make an excellent case for why democrats must take action on filibuster reform. i'm joined tonight by howard dean, former governor of vermont and former chair of the dnc. governor dean, good to have you with us tonight. >> thanks for having me on, ed. >> you bet. is this just something harry reid has to do? i mean, if you look at taxation. >> yeah. >> if you look at gun legislation, how could any of this not get filibustered based on what we saw in the 112th? >> actually, the filibuster is designed to thwart the will of the majority. but the problem is not that, because our constitution protects the minority, which is a good thing. the problem is the republicans have made it in a farce. and basically, brought the business of the entire government to a halt. so that's why it must be changed. i'm not for getting rid of it, but i am for changing it dramatically so it can't be abused anymore there are some really important things that face this country

situation. you tell me if john kerry's right for the job. is he right for the job? >> yes. >> is chuck hagel right for the job? >> sure. >> should we discriminate against them? because they are right for the job. >> so you're suggesting that there are no women as qualified as men for these positions. >> i think the moment has to be right on a number of levels. and i think they're good choices. >> a woman as treasury secretary. there's an opening there. there's an opening at treasury, right? >> joe? >> yes, katty. >> is that photograph that's alongside "the new york times" article yesterday disappointing? of course it's disappointing. to see a roomful of men with the president. it would be hard to say that that wasn't the case, right? but i think if you look at what the president has done in terms of the supreme court and advancing to women there, that is incredibly important. >> hear, hear. >> in terms of -- >> why are you saying that -- >> -- for a long time. i would say as a woman, that's more important to me having three women on the supreme court. >> there you go. >> than perhaps having

in vietnam and you go back to chuck hagel and from that standpoint he provides that diversity. can women be in the military where they would be in a position to take that job so we6 to address issues of pipeline. it doesn't start at the presidential appointment. >> but the question is oh why are women not in the pipeline? what can be done about it in the present tense to fix it? those questions are just always difficult to answer and sometimes, difficult to talk about is what i found interesting. >> i also think there's this kind of social network question and i think in some ways that gets to be -- the real issue is here. there's two questions about a, how should we measure this. all of the appointments, all the cabinet level appointments, who's in the inner circle because once you get to that it is a very male inner circumstance. >> except for valerie jarrett. is it a largely male inner circle? >> he's a man's man. >> and so the question becomes, who -- having lived in washington and watch this operate and my wife worked in the white house, so much of washington operates along the kind
